Understanding Microtia
What Parents Should Know
There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding microtia. It's important that we offer facts and educate parents and young patients about the causes of and risk factors associated with the condition.
Parents should know that microtia is not caused by the mother or during pregnancy. Children will have normal speech development. Additionally, microtia is not associated with kidney disease or any other chronic diseases.
Our Recommendations:
- Rule out a syndrome
- Confirm hearing in your child’s normal ear
- Consider a bone conduction hearing aid before six months of age
- Avoid X-rays & scans before your child is two and a half years old
- Request a complimentary video consultation

“Amazing care, concern and communication from first meeting to surgery on my daughter. I can’t say enough about this practice - so grateful we were able to connect with the Reinisch team!”
